Conference innovation

In the context of ongoing health reform, increasing system demands, and the need for sustainable, future-focused solutions, the AMA25 National Conference, taking place in Adelaide, South Australia, presents a timely opportunity for doctors across the sector to engage in critical discussions shaping Australian healthcare.

Under the theme “Safeguarding Australia’s Healthcare,” the conference will bring together general practitioners, interns, registrars, students and private specialists to explore the evolving role of medicine in addressing national challenges. From governance and ethics to cybersecurity, leadership, and clinical sustainability, the medical landscape is changing rapidly in 2025, and this is the opportunity to witness the forefront of medical news at a stand still.

Breadth of the profession

The AMA25 program is designed to reflect the diverse experiences and responsibilities of medical professionals. While clinical excellence remains a cornerstone of the profession, the broader context in which healthcare is delivered, policy frameworks, digital transformation, practice governance, and health equity, continues to grow in complexity.

Sessions throughout the conference will offer structured insights into these intersecting domains, supporting doctors to not only enhance their individual practice but contribute to the broader national dialogue on healthcare improvement and reform.

Policy, practice and the future

A highlight of the program will include an address from Australia’s incoming Health Commissioner, offering attendees a direct lens into the policy directions likely to influence healthcare over the coming years. The program will also delve into practical and strategic approaches for safeguarding individual medical practices, with discussions covering cybersecurity, ethical risk, and organisational governance. These topics are particularly relevant as health systems contend with technological disruption, increasing regulation, and shifting patient expectations. AMA25 provides a space to look more closely at these issues, alongside professional peers and sector leaders.

As Conference Convenor Dr Sanjay Hettige explains, “Our theme, Safeguarding Australia’s Healthcare, addresses the challenges facing doctors today.” His focus on the value of knowledge-sharing and community engagement underscores the broader intent of the event: to build a collective understanding and response to current and future pressures.

Diverse expertise and lived experience

AMA25 will also feature keynote presentations from individuals who bring a range of lived experience and professional insight to the program. Dr James Muecke AM, Australian of the Year 2020, will speak on his work addressing preventable blindness through the not-for-profit organisation Sight For All, and his advocacy around the impact of diet and diabetes-related eye disease. With more than three decades of experience in humanitarian ophthalmology and public health, Dr Muecke offers both clinical depth and a compelling perspective on systemic change in population health.

Also joining the speaker program is Gill Hicks MBE AM, a peace advocate and survivor of the 2005 London terrorist attacks. Gill’s professional work in the charity and resilience sectors, and her experience designing community-based responses to violence and trauma, brings a unique and human-centred dimension to discussions about recovery, rehabilitation, and the role of compassion in healthcare. Together, these keynote contributions reflect the intersection of clinical care, advocacy, public health, and human experience.

Leadership in Practice

The conference will also benefit from the leadership of Dr Danielle McMullen, Federal AMA President and Brisbane-based GP. Dr McMullen’s experience spans multiple facets of healthcare reform, including her roles with the Australian Digital Health Agency and the Strengthening Medicare Taskforce. Her commitment to improving system design, championing quality governance, and building a strong future for the medical workforce ensures that AMA25 remains aligned with practical policy implementation and long-term system sustainability.

The host: Adelaide

Hosting the conference in Adelaide means placing AMA25 in one of Australia’s most dynamic health and medical research ecosystems. As the capital of South Australia, Adelaide is home to a thriving network of institutions at the forefront of healthcare innovation, education, and translational research.

The city’s BioMed City precinct, one of the largest health and life sciences clusters in the Southern Hemisphere, brings together hospitals, research institutes, and universities in a purpose-built, collaborative environment. Anchored by the Royal Adelaide Hospital, the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), and leading academic institutions including the University of Adelaide, UniSA and Flinders University, the precinct exemplifies a commitment to advancing medical science and improving patient care through innovation.

Adelaide’s strategic investment in digital health, genomics, and clinical trials has positioned it as a leader in the integration of research and clinical application. The city has also been recognised for its contributions to public health policy, data-driven health solutions, and its collaborative approach across government, academia, and healthcare providers.

Beyond its professional appeal, delegates will find themselves in close proximity to the conference venue, accommodation, and a vibrant food, arts, and cultural scene—all of which make for a perfect conference experience to those visiting from interstate.
